DeDe! Get out of my lab, I’m trying to electrocute wounds!

Sure, I could have easily gone to Dr. Frankenstein for this one….but I thought I’d let my favorite little scientist teach me a little more about wound care:

omelete du fromage ? (is what I should have had for breakfast)

So, did you know you could use electricity to help heal wounds?! True Facts!

Basically, intact skin has a current (due to the Sodium Ion Pump) of ~ -23mV which get interrupted when your skin is damaged. Acute wounds short circuit this current and chronic wounds basically have no current.

What do we do then? Well, add a little science of course.

Electrical stimulation can mimic the natural current of an injury helping it to heal….it has lots of positive effects and doesn’t really even hurt (just tingles a little)

However, before you go plugging in your bo bo …as your friendly neighborhood physical therapist all about it.

Now some review for my friendly neighborhood classmates:

Therapeutic dose = 240 – 500 ucoulombs

 75 – 150 V, 100 pps, 45-60 minutes 5 – 7 days/week

Negative polarity if: granulating and decreasing exudate OR if healing stalls

Positive: when healing is not progressing and until healing stalls
